The Bethlem Gallery The Bethlem Gallery in collaboration with The Bethlem Royal Hospital Archives and Museum will be inviting service users, staff, and members of the public to take part in our Big Draw project for World Mental Health Day. Participants will be asked to donate a spontaneous drawing responding to the themes 'inside out', and 'personal histories'. Credo Credo is a community rehabilitation project based in the London Borough of Bromley. Our aim is to challenge society’s attitudes towards those recovering from mental illness. A team of service users and trainers produce the full colour printed Day2Day newsletter. Training is provided in graphic design and digital photography and imaging using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator as well as journalism skills such as interviewing, article writing and editing. No prior experience is necessary training programmes developed on an individual basis. Referrals are accepted for any client resident in Southwark using secondary mental health services. Self-referrals accepted. Teamwork is a highly valued element of the work ethos so clients must have a willingness to develop their ability to work alongside others as well as developing independent working skills. The Institute of Psychiatry Gallery, King’s College, London The IoP Gallery promotes the work of artists with links to the Institute of Psychiatry’s remit of mental health care and research, with the aim of widening debate and removing the stigmatisation often associated with mental health. Exhibitions are usually held every three months during term-time and are open to the public. The IoP Gallery is not commercial and does not charge commission. A BRIEF OUTLINE... Network Arts Lewisham is an arts project set up for people with mental health support needs, launched in March 1996. Supported by The South London and Maudsley NHS Trust, we are a user led project and run along the lines of a small creative business. Arts in mental health in Southwark Southwark has a fantastic array of user/ survivor led arts organisations and Day Centre arts projects, offering different activities, workshops and events in different media. These include web and graphic design, performances, radio, sound and music and drumming, creative writing/poetry, journalism, photography, visual art and 3 dimensional exhibitions and multi media presentations and festivals. All of the organisations are members of the Southwark arts in mental health forum, which is currently developing the next stage on from the Southwark Arts in Mental Health Strategy (2003). Names of arts and mental health organisations involved in the Forum: Blackfriars Settlement work Centre, Castle Arts, Chaucer Resource Centre, Cooltan Arts, Copleston mental health project, Creative Routes, Day2Day (Southwark Community opportunities magazine), Life and Living radio project, Maroon resource Centre (service for Afro-Caribbean mental health users), Maudsley Hospital art exhibitions by service users, Maudsley Occupational Resource Centre creative groups, Mental Fight Club, SIMBA (working to raise awareness and improve mental health services for black people), Southwark Mind Arts Collective creative writing group, and the 3 C's Day Centres. All of these initiatives offer great choices and opportunities for people with mental health problems and survivors to be creative, express themselves, promote mental health and educate and increase awareness of the talents, skills, qualities, creativity they have. The arts organisations and projects have their own unique identities and activities. Members work collaboratively, developing skills in management, fundraising, marketing, exhibiting and working with other mainstream arts organisations, businesses and government.Southwark has also played an important role in helping to develop the London wide network of arts in mental health called "Creative Minds" and the events at the Tate Modern on October 6th 2004 and October 11th 2005. Survivors' Poetry is a national literature and performance charity. As an organisation, it is dedicated to celebrating the creative expression of survivors, and to the promotion of poetry by survivors of mental distress. Survivors' Poetry is a user led organisation, providing workshops, performances, readings, training courses and publications to the widest possible audience of survivors, health service providers and arts professionals, with over 95% of staff, volunteers, trustees and advisors coming from a survivor background. As a charity, Survivors' Poetry aims to reach all survivors: the one in four who experience mental health problems at some point in their lives, those who self define, or identify with our definition, and those who do not define themselves at all. In this artistic mission, Survivors' Poetry states its prime purpose as: "Challenging and changing the social and cutural definitions of poets and poetry, making connections between creativity and mental health." Trust Art Project (TAP) is the London based arts and health agency. We have been providing services that benefit health and well being for 11 years. Our ethos is providing client- led art, design, cultural programmes and services. As well as working in a range of commercial and community settings, we provide specialist in- patient mental health projects and for vulnerable people. We are also a service provider for Sure Start.
